New Years Resolutions

As a new dog owner, there are a few things I would like to accomplish in the new year.

  1. Be better about taking Sammie out to exercise.
  2. Teach Sammie to walk better on a leash. Which might mean…
  3. Signing us up for a dog obedience class!
  4. Be more consistent in expectations of her while traveling.
  5. Be able to leave Sammie alone in the house for extended periods of time.
  6. Find a way for Sammie to not be so itchy any more!

2015 is going to be a great year! We can do this, y’all…

As for No. 2, keep treats or even a handful of Sammie’s dog food in a plastic bag in your pocket. Take Sammie out for a walk. If Sammie pulls, you stop. Make Sammie sit when you do. Give a treat. Start to walk again, if Sammie pulls, stop. Make Sammie sit. Give a treat. It is nothing but repetition and persistence that will get Sammie to walk better on the leash. It does not happen overnight, but it will happen. Once Sammie is trained, when you stop, Sammie sits. This method worked for me with our two dogs. They know that when they sit, they hear the crinkle of the plastic bag in my pocket and know they get a treat. (which for them, I use their dog food) Good luck & Happy New Year!

She gets so distracted by food that she doesn’t listen well to what’s being asked of her. Although that distraction could prove useful on a walk to keep her from pulling…

Happy New Year to you all as well!
