I’ve tried to write about this several times, and it never comes out quite right. Do the words to describe what’s closest to your heart ever come out right?
I can’t let October pass without calling your attention to the fact that it is Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog Month. Now, I’m not someone who is opposed to individuals buying their dogs from a REPUTABLE breeder, but I will say this: adoption has been an absolute blessing to our family.
Owning a dog, however, is a lot of work and not something to be taken lightly. I think there are a lot of people who don’t understand that, hence the number of animals in the shelters. But when you dedicate yourself to your pet, you will find the most understanding friend – someone who knows you better than you know yourself, someone who sees the best in you.
If you’re ready for that level of commitment, I highly recommend checking out your local shelter (or clicking on one of the links at the top of my page). Your best friend might just be waiting for you there! I know mine was…

I am one of those “reputable breeder” dogs. Mommy and my breeder stay in touch, and that’s how I found out my dog mommy died just this year. 😦 Mom says she has had several wonderful (but not as wonderful as me) dogs from shelters and rescues. We say EVERY month is adopt a shelter dog month!!

We are with you on that one! We are thinking our next pooch (Sammie needs a playmate) might be from a breeder. We kind of want a little bitty puppy…

We got Bonnie from a rehoming centre on Halloween last year and I’m so glad we adopted her but I would definitely consider getting a reputable breeder puppy in the future as I would love to do all the socialising and early puppy training that I missed out on with Bonnie.

I prefer adoption of course but I can understand the want for a puppy! In Australia we have a great website on which all the shelters can advertise their animals – they provide a search engine so you can find the age, breed and locality that suits. There are also breed-specific rescue groups which might be able to keep an eye out for puppies of a particular breed you like. Just a thought of course 😉

Haha! In the US, we have quite a few websites (I try to share the most popular at the top of my blog so other readers can find their new best fried), but I don’t know how widely they are used. Rescues, for example, haven’t seemed to catch on to these websites, so you have to hunt for them individually.

Mom was looking at some schnauzer rescue sites last week and they want $300 and up for the rescues. She understands they need to cover their costs, but still…

That’s a pain! Australia has a smaller population (humans & animals) so would be easier here for the rescue groups.
