Emma’s First Vet Visit

I wish I could say this first vet visit was for her booster shots, but those aren’t for another two weeks. Instead, we had to go because of a little accident that she and Sammie had last night.

When I pulled into the driveway after work, I could see Emma chewing on her ball through the window. I was talking to my mom, so sat there for a second watching her before I decided to get out, grab my stuff, and head down to the door. When I stepped through the door, I heard the most pathetic whining and I looked around, asking Aaron what happened. Apparently, she and Sammie collided and she came away from it crying bloody murder. So I picked her up and she quieted down. When I sat down with her, she started whimpering again. To see what was wrong, we put her down on the ground and she immediately just fell over. No weight on her back left leg.

So I started feeling it up and down, and there were no tender spots until I tried to straighten out her leg – she REFUSED to let me do that. Before we rushed her to the vet, we waited to see if she would come out of it on her own.

And she didn’t.

All night, she laid around, and any time her leg was bumped wrong, she started crying again. We put her in her kennel overnight since she hadn’t pooped since she injured herself and still hadn’t figured out how to squat on one back leg to pee.

This morning, we got up super early and got ready for work. Aaron took her to the vet as soon as they opened, but the vet wasn’t in yet. He left her there and waited for them to call with the prognosis.

The vet did an x-ray and there are no broken bones, but she thinks that there is some ligament damage so Emma has been put in a splint for the next few weeks until she goes in for her booster shots. She is not allowed to walk at all (which is fine because she hasn’t figured out how to walk on only three legs).

I took her out to potty at lunch, and she peed standing straight up. I made sure her splinted leg was off to the side a little bit so she wouldn’t get the wrapping wet (if it does, we have to take her back in for them to redo it). Poor girl! She has acted so sad and dejected since “the incident”. I just hope she heals fine!!
